Living in Taipei is not for the faint of heart – especially in the Summer. The air quality chokes the lungs. The heat wrenches the sweat out of you. And, you can’t get good Hummus, Tahina, Falafel, Shwarma or pita anywhere unless you have Israeli friends willing to share. And yes, I could kill for a Shawarma Esh Tanur from Moshiko’s, right now.

But, I’m stuck in Taipei for the next few months, so I’ll have to keep a tight rein on my homicidal need for good Ochel Yerushalmi.

America Crumbles

I’ve been involved in a number of online ‘wars’ over the debt ceiling and the US Federal deficit. It surprises me how many are willing to pony up worn out slogans while forgetting the most important player in this debate: the Average American.

Yes, I know that there are deep problems with the national debt, and I scream about it as loudly as anyone I know. In fact, I’m sure that some of the forums I haunt are thoroughly sick of me.

I just finished watching, for the second time, an incredibly powerful video.

It’s called Rumors of War II. I’m sure that before it’s all over, I’ll have watched it several times more. It truly is a video that grabs you by the neck and gives you a shake. If your world-view wasn’t already shaken, it will have been shaken by the end of this video.

Unless you’re made of stone.

(Of course, if you ARE made of stone, this blog isn’t for you.)

Give Me Room!

You might not think that recent housing protests in Israel are significant. But, I’m here to tell you they are, and why.

Over 300,000 Israelis protested the cost of housing yesterday, and you cannot help but sympathize with them, because the cost of housing in Israel is very, very high. In some places, it’s insane.

The reason for that is land. There’s not enough of it, and all of it is owned by the Israeli government. Well, at least something like 95% of it.

It Really Is TEOTWAWKI

Well, if you needed confirmation that the budget agreement was a bad idea, you only need to look to the DOW which plunged more than 500 points. And, the criticism from the rest of the world.

If this continues, it’s TEOTWAWKI. Of course, it’s been TEOTWAWKI for a while now. We just haven’t been paying attention.

According to David Walker, former comptroller general of the Government Accountability Office (GAO):
