A friend of mine was telling me that her daughter in Israel said…
(This is how urban legends get started, but this is legit)
…that there is a US Aircraft Carrier off the coast of Israel.
She said that all the Americans in Israel are going “Woo Hoo!” And, the Israelis are feeling the dread of possible war.
I actually know the feeling from BOTH sides. I’ve lived in Israel long enough to be part Israeli, while still American, and I know the feeling of exhilaration of seeing my country (the US) demonstrate her power. However, I also know the feeling of dread when that demonstration of power might threaten the other ‘my country’ (Israel).
It puts me in an interesting position.
Or, maybe I should say that it helps me understand how others feel when the single most powerful weapon in the history of the world sits off of your coast.
When you say ‘Aircraft Carrier’, what you are really saying is ‘Aircraft Carrier Battle Group’. It is the most incredible weapon ever devised by man. Nothing can stand before it. Just one Battle Group could destroy an entire country in a day – and has. It is both an impregnable fortress and the most powerful offensive weapon ever. When a USÂ Aircraft Carrier Battle Group comes knocking at your door, you invite them in for tea.
Or, even coffee.
But, a Battle Group also means that there is trouble ahead, and THAT is what makes Israelis (and me) nervous.
