Sandmonkey is Down

Yossi was sick and Skyped me this morning.

He thought that he could share the pain, but I was having none of it. I’ll do a lot for friends, but taking on a nasty bout of food poisoning is right over the line.

However, Yossi DID succeed in dropping a bomb on me. He very casually said, “Oh by the way, did you know that Sandmonkey is down?”

Whoa. Sandmonkey is ‘off the air’?

I couldn’t believe it.

To have an Arab writer with as much attitude as Sandmonkey‘s… well, it is incredible to behold and always worth celebrating. He’s funny. He thinks ‘outside the box’. He has a great sense of the absurd. He supports Israel. Can you get more awesome than that?

Here is how he describes himself:

Be forewarned: The writer of this blog is an extremely cynical, snarky, pro-US, secular, libertarian, disgruntled sandmonkey. If this is your cup of tea, please enjoy your stay here. If not, please sod off.

Support the Neo-con American Right-wing Zionist Christian Imperialist Conspiracy in the Middle-east!

An Arab writer that describes himself like this? Give me more!

The only problem that I’ve had with him is that he’s quite, um… crude. So, I haven’t been able to recommend his writing to everyone and have found it more than a Little difficult myself. (Living in the world that we do, often requires the making of a few compromises.)

Why is Sandmonkey down? Well, it seems that the Egyptian government has been putting on the pressure, but I’ll let Sandmonkey say it in his own words:

Today is going to be the day that I’ve been dreading for quite sometime now. Today is the day I walk away from this blog. Done. Finished.

There are many reasons, each would take a post to list, and I just do not have the energy to list them. As anyone who has been reading this blog for the past month, I think it is apparent that things are not the same with me. There are reasons for that:

One of the chief reasons is the fact that there has been too much heat around me lately. I no longer believe that my anonymity is kept, especially with State Security agents lurking around my street and asking questions about me since that day. I ignore that, the same way I ignored all the clicking noises that my phones started to exhibit all of a sudden, or  the law suit filed by Judge Mourad on my friends, and instead grew bolder and more reckless at a time where everybody else started being more cautious. It took me a while to take note of the fear that has been gripping our little blogsphere and comprehend what it really means. The prospects for improvement, to put it slightly, look pretty grim. I was the model of caution, and believing in my invincibility by managing not to get arrested for the past 2 and a half years, I’ve grown reckless. Stupid Monkey. Stupid! […]

Read the rest of his post here: http://www.sandmonkey.org/2007/04/28/done/

He also offers a postscript here: http://www.sandmonkey.org/2007/05/02/the-next-step/

The good thing is that his previous posts are still active. We’ll see if they remain that way.

Sandmonkey also promises a book, so keep an eye out for it. I’ll try to let y’all know when the book hits the shelves. Any book that he writes will be controversial and…

…extremely cynical, snarky, pro-US, secular, libertarian, disgruntled…

And, it will support…

…the Neo-con American Right-wing Zionist Christian Imperialist Conspiracy in the Middle-east!

Let’s hope that he continues to find ways to do so.

  1. I object!!!!!!

You do realize that this news brings out the totally rebellious side of my nature….shocking I know….

nevertheless true and makes me want to go do SOMETHING..

Oh, and fix whatever needs to be fixed on your end because I’m no longer receiving this in my inbox.

Thanks for ruffling my feathers and have a nice day!

    s

  2. DID YOU READ THE NEXT STEP!!!!!!!! Why of course you did.

I dont know about you but my minds going faster than I can keep up……let me just bite into a piece of this juicy steak and naw on it for a while

  3. What ja do go on vacation? Did ja go to Cali by any chance?

You know Sandmonkey is right. He said that bloggers who comment don’t have much to say. Sure there are a choice few who may have adequate knowledge of the subject, but the majority of comments I read are nothing more than vented frustration. Usually one such as yourself digs deeper and presents more than enough information to put lots of us into a coma.

Clearly the net and blogging has opened up the eyes of big business but can the same results be pulled off with the political movers and shakers of our world. Can blogging affectivley change the course of the status quo?

Hmmmmmmmm….and how would one go about the protecting of world wide web bloggers?

Maybe recruit them into the military and form the “new” commando.

Really though, when you really think about it they are taking there lives into their own hands like the press does when it goes out into the field.

So these bloggers are not willing to die for their political cause????

From a spiritual perspective it’s obviously not a cause. What is gained by loosing here?

For the advancement of the Gospel of Christ now there’s a cause to die for!!!

    Matthew 16:25
For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it’ but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it.

    Die to self….

  4. HI john…i hate this…i agree with all you said about Sandmonkey…oyoyoyoyoy…sorry i have not been online much…life just got in the way…hope all is well with you…soon john soon

  5. I’m probably going to get verbally abused here, but I thought
Sandmonkey was an AMerican. I thought he was only living in Egypt.
He has a very clear grasp of the “Young American Culture”. I’m thinking the MTV, Grunge, Gen X culture? He may think out of the box through the perpectives of mideasterners, but he reminds me of a lot of the fine art students (writing, painting, etc.)of the 90s..the coffee house..dressed in black and combat boots with vintage garb..The ones that tried to be different, but ended up being the same. Or maybe with a slight thread of the industrial/alternative style underground music.
HOWEVER, I was only able to read the last month or so of his stuff..For some reason, my computer won’t access the archives.
Yes, he is funny and entertaining and has a better grasp of the English language than I do, Ya know? Way totally impressive, so to all of his fannnnnnnatics out there, try and not freak out at me.

  6. Actually Anna I don’t think your to far off. You are probably right on the money.

All along the net and blogoshphere and other websites i’ve picked up on some pretty interesting clues. I now have the makings of a New York times Best Seller.

NOW I have a screen play like you wouldn’t believe.

Even better than the Bourne Trilogy. Good movies if you are into that sort of thing.

    Mwwwwaaaaa…..I love a good mystery

  7. Anna and SassyPants,
SandMonkey has been accused of all you have hypothesized and more. People have accused him of being an American living in Egypt (as you feel), more often of being an Egyptian living in America and being out of touch with the typical Egyptian, of being an Israeli working for some nefarious black governmental agency and so on and on, ad nauseum….
I read his blog for a year or two before he decided to quit, from what I gather his parents (at least one) are Egyptians in the diplomatic service, he was educated in America and works in the banking industry in Egypt. I’ve seen many pictures of Egyptian current events taken by him and some of him taken in Egypt, although his face was obscured to protect is identity. I’ve seen recent articles of his published on Pajamas Media and seen articles about him on some of the major news outlets. Although I could never be absolutely sure, I would bet my money on him being an Egyptian living in Egypt, as boring as that sounds to those who love a conspiracy (SassyPants….are you listening? LOL).
Sam, as he calls himself is a single, young and very hip middle eastern man who rejects the backwardness and hate that languishes in parts of the middle east. He realizes that the hate is preached as a political tool to sway the feeble minded portion of the populace into misplacing their misery and to blame innocent victims and not the real perpetrators. As his blog says, he is a bit irreverent and I may not want my pre-teens reading some of his rants but he is a source of logic and free thinking that is sorely needed in the region. We all hope there will be a day when he feels secure enough to continue with the work that he’s started. We miss you Sam, come back when you are able to.

  8. Dude your preachin to the choir.

I read his blog. I agreed with what he said and laughed at how he said it.

Maybe he will come back with a less crude version eventually.

AND let’s get something straight. No one tells me what I can and cannot think! (Ya listening Tedder?) LoL

He’ll be back and better than ever!

  9. Would not, could not and wouldn’t even think to tell you what to think. Just tellin ya what I think, capeesh?

“He’ll be back and better than ever!”
I think he will also, let’s hope it’s sooner than later.
    I like your moniker sassypants!

  10. While Sandmonkeys blog was less than palitable for women, I give the guy props for his technique. He reached exactly the audiance that needs to be reached through the way he wrote.

Some accused him of having multiple blogs. I raise my stein to him for his insightful brillance if he did

and send a big frothy grin his way!!!!

The dude took the “male mind” to the extreme and this girl thinks he really needs find a wife but quick.

    LoL :)

  11. “this girl thinks he really needs find a wife but quick.”

Hehehe, I wonder what he thinks about that!
(I may even agree with you here, don’t tell Sam though!)

  12. Hey, I have an idea SP-
why don’t you start a fansite for SM?
    That would get his attention…

No, I will not help you:)

  13. LoL!!! Anna you made the suggestion so you have to help me with the site

Attention? The boys got enough attention.

I’ll come up with the obnoxious t-shirt though….

If he was a rock star….well we won’t go there….LoL
