Yesterday, I was reading some posts by Sandmonkey, and I laughed so hard that I almost fell out of my chair. That guy never fails to pry a laugh out of me. Some of his stuff is funny because I know the Middle East. And some of it is funny because it just is – which means that everyone will probably get it. (However, be warned that he can be a bit crude.)
Anyway, he posted a link to a cute video that ran as an advertisement on Egyptian TV a couple years ago. It was one of those Wazzap adverts localised for a local Egyptian cellular phone service. But, on the YouTube sidebar, there was this darkly humorous ad titled “Arab blowing himself up”.
I haven’t laughed so hard in a long time.
That got me thinking.
When I was working as a wage slave at a high-tech company in Jerusalem, I used to have a joke list. My jokes would range far and wide, crossing the globe and appearing in all kinds of places, the Philippines, Singapore, exotic parts of USA,  and of course my buddies at Banter.
Then, the Tanzim started shooting up my neighborhood in 2001, and I lost my sense of humour. My joke list became one of angst over what the Palestinians were doing to my neighborhood, my friends, and my country-of-choice.
Well, there really isn’t any reason to be one or the other. Why not be both? Especially since there really is a dark humour to life in Israel. Even when they are throwing bombs at you and killing your neighbors, Israelis have a great capacity for laughter. It’s sardonic and ironic – even sarcastic. But, life is like that.
And, of course, there is a cosmic irony to the fact that I am safer in Jerusalem than I am here, in a suburb of Indianapolis. It’s just one of those things.
Having said that, here’s the video that got me laughing so hard:
Have a great weekend everyone, and lighten up!
