You know, I understand why the Palestinians hate.

Look at their past. How can anyone with a history like the Palestinians be anything but hateful? There have been generations of poverty. They’ve been defeated in every war that they’ve ever fought in the past 200 years. They want to be proud of their heritage, but they can’t seem to win – not even once.

No one in the Arab world likes them. Even the pariahs of the world don’t let them into their countries, unless they’ve been checked over three times.

You know, I understand why the Palestinians hate.

I confess that I’ve spent a lot of time wondering where the Palestinians get their feeling of strength and superiority. Anyone looking at them would see the hollowness of any claim that they are on the path to victory over Israel.

But then, I understood their secret weapon.

Once I had stumbled upon their ‘Ace in the hole’, I knew why they could confidently claim that victory was only a matter of time. Their secret gives them feelings of superiority. It gives them permission to do things that they would never have done otherwise. It puts food in their mouths and makes them friends all over the world.

I did something amazing on Saturday.

Well, actually it wasn’t what I did. It was what I bought.

A phone. Cellular.

Two hundred something bucks and it fit… Well, it was so small that you could lose it in your pockets. And, as long as I pay my forty something dollar bill every month, I can talk as long as I want, to anyone in the US – as long as I stick around central Indiana.

Amazing.

Those of us who care about Israel are going to be chewing over the results of the most recent election for a long time. We’ll wonder if America’s support for Israel will fail. We’ll wonder if Israel’s enemies will nudge American foreign policy into a posture of appeasement.

There’s a lot of things that we’ll wonder about.

But for all of our worrying, we must never forget that our greatest friend is democracy itself.

Israel cannot afford to have an America that has turned its back on democracy. Israel cannot afford an America that doesn’t listen to the will of the American people.

It’s the day after the day after the election. Hmmm… Let me say that better.

It’s the day after the day of the results of the election.

Much better.

Elections. Results. In America.

There was grief. There was joy. I was there.

In Israel, there were different kinds of grief and different kinds of joy, and I wasn’t there.

When I was there, in Israel, I was a non-Jewish American living in Israel.

Now, after 14 years in Israel, I’m back in the US, and I find myself to be a non-Gentile Israeli living in America. It’s a strange feeling, and one that I’ll talk about more later.
