So, what do we do?
Terrorists are a threat, but they are a threat that we can handle and, eventually, live with. We will develop security measures. We will punish those who support them. We will find them where they live, and kill them.
Terrorism is a quantifiable threat that can be managed and, if managed properly, will not be a threat to national security. Okay, okay, only Israel manages the threat properly, but we can hope that the others are getting there.
But, what about Iran? In just a few short years Iran will have the capacity to create enough nuclear weapons to turn the world into a cinder. Managing terrorism is one thing, but a radical Islamic country in which their officials lead rallies chanting death to America? And then letting them have nuclear weapons?
Iran is ruled by those who believe that they are commanded by the Qur’an to lie to Westerners, and even to their own people. They are ruled by those who are willing to use any and all vicious means to control their own people and the countries around them. But, the scariest point is this: They are ruled by those who believe that creating world-wide destruction will bring in the Mahdi. Nothing beats an arsenal of nuclear weapons when you want to create world-wide destruction.
Do you really want to let these people have nuclear weapons?
I agree. The answer is ‘of course not’.
So? What are we prepared to do to fix the problem?
We could try invading Iran with troops and conventional weapons. We’d lose, but we could at least try.
We could bomb their nuclear facilities, but would we really know if we’d got them all? Iranians aren’t stupid. They know about bombs.
We could send in spies and sabateurs. We could fund counter-radicals and revolutionary groups to try and bring down their government, but Saddam had been doing that for years. Can we really trust that this will work?
We could send in young men and women with flowers in their hair and charm them to death.
We could send in diplomats and try and talk them to death.
Do you see anything in the above list that is even remotely useful? I certainly don’t. However, it’s not a complete list. There is one option here that is NOT listed – an option that WOULD work.
But, just because I can think of no other option… It doesn’t mean that I can think of this one either.
