Independence Day is one of the best holidays on the Israeli calendar. You get a day off from work, and the buses still run.
Of course, it’s more than that.
Every time we observe the independence day of the Jewish state in the land of Israel, it’s a celebration. After more than 2000 years, a nation has been miraculously brought back to life. Even though it is a pariah, it thrives. She is surrounded and outnumbered by enemies – yet, she prospers.
More than that, she is a country that springs from a people that has been abused for thousands of years – yet, she holds tightly to humanitarian ideals. Even in the face of horrific abuse heaped on her over the past century, she still seeks to give aid and comfort to those around her.
That is the most amazing thing of all.
Oh, I know. You’ve heard about the evil that some Israelis have done, and I do not deny that these things happen. But, guess what? Those that perpetrate evil against either Arab or Jew are punished – whether they are Jews or Arabs.
Is Israel a good country? I don’t know. I don’t even know if a ‘good country’ even exists, but I can tell you this: there are few countries that are better. More than that, no country holds as much promise as Israel.
Happy Birthday Israel! May God bless all those who celebrate with you.
