The Solar Eclipse here in Jerusalem will reach it’s peak today at 10:56:42, universal time – or 12:56:42, Israel Time.

Believe it or not, that’s more important news to me than the election results.

I can feel how shocked and horrified you are that I would say that. Please turn it down. I have a headache.

Look, to see my point, just pull out editions of the Jerusalem Post from the 50s. And, when you read those editions, substitute PLO/Hamas for Fedayeen, and West Bank for Negev.

Then you pretty much have today’s news.

By now, most of you have heard how Hamas has won the Palestinian elections. How could you NOT hear?

What you also might notice is that the representatives of Hamas don’t seem to say anything different about Israel than the previous regime, the more ‘moderate’ Fatah party. True, Hamas doesn’t recognize Israel, but most people put that down to the sort of prenegotiation haggling that often goes on around here.

However, you must be annoyed to hear Hamas talk about continuing their armed struggle. When Israel no longer occupies Palestinian land, they say, they’ll stop fighting.

I see that some of you are scratching your heads over why a revolution could ever be ‘under threat’. Well as with most things in this world, organizations (and the ‘movements’ that they advocate) like to perpetuate themselves. They want to keep their jobs. They want to preserve their sense of purpose. They want to be able to tell everyone how great they are.

The ‘Islamic Revolution’ is like that. They are a movement with a name, backed by an organization of people with funny hats, called mullahs. And, like many movements of its kind, it can be threatened.
